Sunshine Rewards - Games Day!!

Our school earned over 8,000 Sunshines as part of the Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) programme.  As a reward, we had a Games Day on the last day of term.  We played Stuck in the Mud with our awesome buddy class, then went and joined the rest of Puriri team on the field for even more fun!

Planting with Brian

Our caretaker, Brian, doesn't just look after our school.  Here he is helping us plant seeds so we can have delicious autumn and winter vegetables.  We planted silverbeet, carrots, broccoli, spinach and parsnips.  Once they grow into seedlings, we'll transfer them to the garden that we share with our buddy class. Maybe we can make some soup to share.

Assembly and butterfly movie

Today we hosted school assembly with our buddy class Room 13.  We shared a movie Kevin helped us put together about the caterpillars and butterflies in our classroom.

Here's what the children thought of their experience:
  • On the stage I was sitting quietly and folding my arms and legs. (Fatafehi)
  • I liked it when we were running around and around and around. (Molly)
  • I was laughing when we were running around. (Arsalaan)
  • I was singing Purerehua. (Joseph)
  • The movie was funny. (Francis)
  • I wanted the microphone. (Jacob)
  • I liked when the butterfly was on my tummy. (Meshae)
  • I was singing and I was folding my arms like Joseph.  I was speaking on the microphone. (Ehmarze)
  • I liked singing the Tena Koe song. (Tiara)

Embracing Diversity

This week we have been marking Race Relations Day by learning about the different cultures in our class and school.  Today we had a big celebration with lots of special guests.  We made a book to share at assembly, inspired by another book we've been reading called Watercress Tuna and the Children of Champion St by Patricia Grace.

You can click on the link  Tui and the children of Room 8 and then click on the Present button on the top right hand corner.  We hope you enjoy it.

Discovery time

Discovery Time is such a great way for children to explore, interact and enjoy things and each other. Their observations and conversations are awesome to watch and listen to.
Mubarak "It's turning fast".
Joseph "I'm playing with pois and Ehmarze".
Chandra "I'm making a ghost".
Arsalaan "I'm opening this.  It's got a prize".
Fatafehi "We're combing her hair because she's nice"
Tiara "I'm eating a banana"
Meshae "I'm using a comb"
Fatafehi " Look at this one - it's similar. It's a brush"
Pamela "I'm building a set".
Jacob "The car is stuck.  Its wheels are spinning!"
Francis "I'm going shopping.  I"m pushing a trolley"
Kapi "This is LIKE"
Molly "This is ME"
Mapa "I'm going shopping. I'm buying tuna".
Angela "I'm playing shopping with Mapa and I'm sharing"
Rosa "I'm going to buy some food here"

Looking after our gardens

This week it was our turn to look after the Rainbow and vegetable garden.  We looked at different types of plants and learned about weeds.  We pulled out lots of weeds, watered everything and planted some new kale.  We got to harvest beans, which some of us enjoyed as a snack!

Another exciting Friday

Lots of awesome things happened in our class today.  Two of the highlights were:

  • seeing our caterpillar hanging by a thread in the morning and then by morning tea time it was a chrysalis!  We'd love to see the butterfly coming out on Monday.  Who knows how long the chrysalis lasts for?
  • having our buddy class Room 13 come and read with us.  Everybody was totally engrossed in their books.  We can't wait for more learning and fun with our buddies.

Super swimmers

We are so lucky to have Reuben, Liam and Dushon take us for swimming for two weeks.
Here are some things they're helping us with.

Little kicks with our feet.

Feeling comfortable in the water.

Getting our faces wet.

Floating - with floatation devices and without.

Streamlined arms.

New Year, New Children!

What a fabulous, busy start we've had to our learning in Room 8.  We hope you enjoy looking at our blog.  Please feel free to leave a comment - the children love knowing that people are interested in what they are doing at school.

Here are some pictures of just a few of the things we've been doing this week.

Learning about number 1 and finding 1 object each from around our classroom

Drawing different objects and trying to write down the first letter sound in that word.

Matching objects to numbers shown on the cards.

Finding objects from our classroom and writing how many we have.

Getting prizes from the fabulous blue fairy for returning holiday reading diaries.

Quietly enjoying books in our library.

Discovering possibilities with red, blue and yellow paint.

Doing our best to write numbers and letters.
