Patterns, Patterns, Patterns

Patterns are everywhere but they can be hard to describe, continue or create.  We have spent a few afternoons looking around our classroom to find patterns and describe patterns, and also to make our own.

Some questions the children had to think about:
- is a row of the same colour a pattern?
- if you are using 2 colours, do you have to put them in an order to make a pattern?
- how many bits (colours / shapes / different components) can you have in a pattern?

Some people found it tricky at first but after a few goes, everyone was able to make patterns with different colours or shapes.

Sunflowers

Our sunflower seedlings that we planted at the start of term are getting too big for the pots they were in so we had to transfer them into bigger pots.  Like people, plants need enough space to grow up big and healthy.  We also gave them a big drink of water.

Taekwando

In Taekwando we have been learning to listen to instructions, stand up tall, keep our arms and legs strong and to persevere when we don't get it right.  Check out these awesome high kicks!

Our omelettes

As part of our learning about healthy living, today we made omelettes.
We used eggs, tomatoes, spinach and water.
Everyone helped - some people chopped tomatoes, others cracked the eggs. It was hard cracking the eggs and one fell on the table.  Jacob said it looked like slime.
We beat the eggs in the bowl and added a little water.
Then Ms Mey turned on the electric frypan, put a little oil in and tomatoes followed by the egg mixture.  Lastly we added the spinach leaves.  Everyone got a chance to stir and everyone got a chance to taste the omelette.
The best thing about omelettes is that you can have them for breakfast, lunch or dinner and you can add in lots of vegetables like mushrooms, spring onions, kale and zucchini.
Lucky for us Andrea came in and helped us to clean up.  Thanks Andrea!

Healthy Living Day

Today we had a day full of events to do with healthy living.

We started making fruit salad and smoothies with our buddy class Room 13.

Then we went to the hall for a super short assembly before going around different stations that had different activities.

We started off at the rheumatic fever station and learned that rheumatic fever can start with a sore throat.  We also got reminders about noseblowing and handwashing.

Next we went to Sport Auckland, where Michael did soccer with our class.

After that it was Crossfit and another soccer station.  Our awesome seniors Safanati, Dylen, Joshua, Petera, Ahmed and Natan helped us learn some new skills.

It was getting quite hot when we got to Adele from the Heart Foundation.  She had lots of skipping ropes for us to use and try to skip or do some tricks.  Some children hadn't tried skipping before so it was pretty tricky but we persevered and Adele was pleased with our efforts!

Last, we went to the workroom to talk with Angie from KidsCan.  She was talking to us about nits and how they can be spread if we are touching heads with someone else, sharing hats or sharing brushes.  People know a lot about nits as they are quite common and it's no big deal.  Angie was pleased everyone know so much and also had lots of questions.

In the afternoon we thought about doing Go Noodle but everyone was exhausted.  Rest is also an important part of healthy living so that's what we did in the afternoon! :)

Healthy Living

We're getting excited about Healthy Living Day this Friday.  We're already doing lots of things in our classroom and school that keep us safe and healthy, like:

Wearing sunhats.

Keeping fit through Tae Kwan Do.

Making healthy smoothies.

Harvesting and eating carrots from our garden.
